The New Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual is a Must Read for Teens and Parents

April 14, 2015 By WKCLawBlog

TeenDrivingTest

Are you the parent of a teenager preparing to take the Pennsylvania driver’s test to obtain his/her driver’s license? If so, I encourage you to join them in reading the new Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual prior to your teenager taking the test. You can read it right now in PDF form on the PennDot website.

This latest update is much more detailed than what I recall reading when I first obtained my driver’s license. It covers new issues such as inattention due to texting, cell phone use, etc. It also addresses how many passengers younger drivers may have in their car. Obviously, it addresses driving under the influence of alcohol. You should be aware that the level of blood alcohol illegal in drivers under the age of 21 is .02% or more, significantly less than the limit of .08% for individuals 21 and over. The manual also provides interesting facts on a variety of issues, such as the data showing that in 2011 one out of ten 16-year-old drivers were involved in reportable automobile accidents.

I believe it is important for parents of new drivers to be aware of all of the issues these new drivers will face on the road, and the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual is a good place to start in gaining that understanding.
